  1. maybe it's just me, but i picked up vegas video to give it a try...

I just can't get used to the timeline function in vegas... adobe just seems
so much more intuitive and easy to manage. Especially when wanting to make precise cuts.. zooming all the way into vegas just looks like a mess.

Anyone know if vegas has the ability to be configured with a preview window and non-source time line (ie. just colored bars)?

    I had the same experience!

Vegas seems a little more user friendly to several users, but not for me...

I try it and ended uo with Premiere...

You can get Premiere 6.5 and DVD Workshop for around $275 when you buy a ADS PYRO Platinum FireWire Card...

    Regards,

    Jose

Vegas is odd in how it edits I agree. The trim or mark in function is very different than other edit programs. Basically there's no MARK IN and OUT KEYS i can find..
So I use SPLIT EVENT and always use this following it by selecting the un-desired half of part and clicking delete (has to be done 2x ((A and V seperately))but one click removes A+V after the sequence desired.)
I agree its less VIDEO EDITOR friendly..but its so much faster and more reliable than premiere, how can you use premiere any more.?
The errors I'm used to in Premiere's Renders and Effx frammes that are not supposed to be there..or aren't smooth..these are gone in VEGAS's version!

    ALSO
SCREENBLAST by SONY for $69 equals VEGAS VIDEO 3
    same program almost!

    with almost nothing missing!

Premiere has got some bugs thats for sure.. most of which you can work around, but that is why I picked up vegas.

If Vegas used a timeline edit function like adobe, it'd be perfect. I just can't get used to it.

screenblast SOLD by sony is made by Sonicfoundry and sold as video factory -- not even close to vegas video ..

In and Out points are same as for other editors .. you can edit with ripple on or off ..

you can group video and audio tracks (lock them ) so one cut only need to be done ..

vegas 4 is comming out in 2 weeks or so and is even better ..

see the creativecow forum for vegas for more comparisons and the use of vegas by a lot of pro editors .

Why, what features are missing..I'm in the dark here....?

"In and Out points are same as for other editors .. you can edit with ripple on or off"
I haven't been able to find a In or Out button anywhere in VEGAS..

The best I find is "add media from cursor A" in the Trimmer.

These are major differences from the editing features people who have edited television shows come to expect and require learning.
Since Vegas's output is much cleaner than the adobe product, i'm up for it!

Thanks for the forum tiP BJ!

here are some common short cuts ... basicly control drag I O points and either cut or insert (ok - not exactly like avid) , you can use J K L keys though to scroll ..

vegas 4 adds to this a lot ..

    Cut selection
    Ctrl+X or
    Shift+Delete

    Copy selection
    Ctrl+C or
    Ctrl+Insert

    Paste
    Ctrl+V or
    Shift+Insert

    Paste Insert
    Ctrl+Shift+V

    Paste repeat
    Ctrl+B

    Delete selection
    Delete

    Mix to new track
    Ctrl+M

    Open in audio editor
    Ctrl+E

    Undo
    Ctrl+Z or
    Alt+Backspace

    Redo
    Ctrl+Shift+Z or
    Ctrl+Y

    Split
    S

    Trim/crop selected events
    Ctrl+T

    Rebuild Peaks
    F5

    Normal tool
    Ctrl+D

    Switch to next editing tool
    D

    Switch to previous editing tool
    Shift+D

in vegas 4 also you can write your own scripts to automat a lot of tasks

I am currently learning to use Premiere and have recently given Vegas a try. Vegas seems to be superior in the audio department (maybe that's because of Sonic Foundry's background in Audio editing). I've decided to put my efforts into learning to use Premiere mainly because there are more learning recources available for Premiere (classes, books, online forums and tutorials, etc.). Maybe that's not such a big deal for those who are already expert video editors, but for someone like me who is trying to graduate from Ulead VideoStudio, I'll take all the help I can get.

That's quite a list BJ_M. Thanks! I will check it out. I guess I could have dug a little deeper for more info, but the local college here has classes for Premiere but not Vegas, and the book store that I frequent (Borders) has probably twenty books on Premiere and had none on Vegas. Either way, I think they are both awesome programs.

BTW, Bullitt, I'm sure many would agree that you don't have to be liberal to be against war and killing. I'll leave it at that since this is not the forum for this discussion.
