    My DVD reads VCD's just fine, I have decided to experiment with SVCD, it read and loads just fine, but when playing begins a black screen comes up and it flickers with scratchy sound, is this an incompatibility issue or am i using wrong conversion settings??

    Could be either.

    Try burning a test SVCD from this site (under the What Is SVCD). That should eliminate the "is it me, or my player" question.
