Open up the AVI in VirtualDub.
Go to the video drop down menu and choose "Direct Stream Copy"
Go to the audio drop down menu and choose "Direct stream copy" (make sure "AVI" is chosen). Then go back into the Audio drop down menu and click on "Interleaving". Put a value in the audio delay, it accepts positive and negative numbers depending on whether the audio is early or late. It may take a bit of experimenting to get it right but it's probably best doing a few tests with only about a minute of the movie selected rather than the whole thing. Reprocessing takes a matter of minutes.
