Lets See ...
I have a AVI, that i convert to MPG, that is recorded on a VCD as .DAT.
I have heard that there are versions of VCDs and players will play a VCD only if it supports that version.
So what do the versions depend upon ?
The AVI, the AVI to MPG converter, the MPG format or the VCD writing software ?
Please advise, it is really very important for me to know this .
Thanks

It depends on the authoring (writing) software. Most authoring software like Nero, WinonCD, EasyCD support VCD 2.0. Most dvd players will play that.
Some authoring software support SVCD, for example Nero 5.x or WinonCD 3.8. Some dvd players will play that too.
The only authoring software (as far as I know), that support all formats (incl. VCD 1.1), is VCDImager.
btw, if you want to burn a VCD, you should create a VCD compliant MPEG-1. So it depends on encoding and multiplexing too.
