Can you burn VOBs from a DVD directly to a DVD-R without con

I have a question. My new compaq has a built in Pioneer DVD-RW. I was wondering if anyone knows whether or not you could rip the DVD, and then burn it to a DVD-R disc without converting? I have Nero and EZ-CD Creator(an old version). Please reply if you have any information or suggestions for me. Thanks.

If you did a direct disk DVD to DVD-R you wouldn't succeed as the original DVD would most likely be DVD9 i.e. dual layered 9.4GB and your DVD-R is single layered i.e. 4.6GB.

Splitting up the VOB files most like wouldn't work as well as the ifo files are important.

Before you however give up hope there are 2 other solutions:

You can either rip the main movie (and see if its under the 4.6GB limit) and generate through the software a new ifo file

or

generate new VOB's, ifo's etc. through DVD authoring software such as DVDit, SpruceUp etc. and select/split the movie into sections etc.

If you want to play the finished DVD-R in your standalone DVD Player check beforehand if it will play such DVD-R's.

Thanks for the help, just a few more questions... How would I go about generating a new IFO file, and what exactly is an ifo file?

The .IFO (and backup .BUP) files contain menus and other information about the video and audio. The .VOB files (for DVD-Video) and .AOB files (for DVD-Audio) are MPEG-2 program streams with additional packets containing navigation and search information.

Some ripping tools will generate ifo's when you rip selective files - otherwise you'll need an DVD authoring program as I mentioned before.

I've been trying to do this with a PC for a while. I've read posts where people with Mac's say it easy. The only way I've succeeded is to rip the vobs down to hard disk, demux the streams i want and then re-author them to a dvd udf image file, then burn them back up using VOB instantdisc which was supplied with the writer. If you've found an easier way i'd be interested in your comments. (Wot buy a Mac !?)
