I just got a PCI Ati Tv Wonder Capture card and its great so far. However i just noticed that it's capture abilites in Ati's program, can't do 480x480.A capture size i heard is the best for Mpeg-2 applications. The best it can do is 480x240.

So assuming it's possible to use this card with software other than ATI's stuff-Are their any better programs out there that i could use this card with to obtain a 480x480 capture?

  2. Junk all the ATI software including the drivers. Afterwards, get new WDM drivers here:

    http:btwincap.sourceforge.net

I personally think that the best capture software around is v-dub. I have excellent results with it anyway. A lot of others are using either avi I_O or virtual vcr. Another one that gives pretty good results would be iuVCR.

The problem you're having is because of the drivers.....dunno though if you can still use the ATI soft with non-ATI drivers
entirely TOO much time on my hands

I was told that all ATI wonder cards made befor the 8500 and 9000 series can not do 480x480 SVCD/DVD capture. This prompted me to get the Hauppauge WinTV-PVR 250. This card can do it all. If you have a fairly fast PC (about 800m or more) and large HD you will get very good results. I am recording HBO Sopranos to HD every week. Then I use TPNGEng Tools to edit, then burn to SVCD (1 hr-2 disks) and play at almost DVD quality. If you have the ATI 8500-9000 series card, their website has new drivers and software. I would not use drivers other then ATI. You are inviting more trouble.

I have to disagree with "ATI Wonder cards cannot do 480x480".

I have an ATI TV Wonder and I can capture in VCD , SVCD and DVD format. You need the right software to do so like Intervideo WinDVR2.0 , Intervideo WinDVD Recorder , Cyberlink PowerVCR or Cyberlink PowerDirector Pro etc.

But don't use the ATI MMC software that came with the video card to capture because you can't do a 480x480 with that unless you hack the registry.

  7. The other ways is to modified the ATI's entry in windows register file.
This way, you don't need any additional software, and the 480x480 option will be permanent. I learn that from this forum.
