  1. I am caputuring home movie content from standard VHS. I'd like to do some editing and create a CD to watch on TV through my standalone DVD player, which supports VCD and XVCD (not SVCD unfortunately)

My question is, since I am just capturing home video, is it worth messing with the XVCD format?

Basically, what is going to give me the best quality when played back on my tv (NTSC), when considering the source. (Mono, home movies).

What is the proper capture resolution for XVCD and VCD for NTSC TV playback anyway?

I would recommend encoding to SVCD or CVD if your player supports it. If it doesn't, I would recommend encoding to XVCD rather than VCD.

  3. Since XVCD could be anything, your question cannot be answered.

The most common form of XVCD is to use standard VCD resolution and raise the bitrate. How high? You must test your individual player to see what it will support.

Another variant of XVCD, among countless millions, is to increase resolution to 352x480, Or 480x480, Or 720x480, along with a higher bitrate.

Will your video look better in one of these non-standard formats? Almost certainly. Is there any way to tell what your player will handle without some trial and error? No. Unless you pick a setting that someone else has tested and reported to work, even then with constant revisions of player hardware, there is no guarantee.

If you do not know what the VCD specs are, check the guidelines prominently displayed to the left. Also, take some time and READ.

Yes, I agree with Nelson37 that XVCD could be anything. Usually resolutions like 480x480, 352x480, and 720x480 are MPEG-2 (SVCD,CVD, and XSVCD or DVD) while a resolution like 352x240 is MPEG-1 (VCD or XVCD).

Hope That Helps you grityyz!!! 8) :P
