  1. could somebody please explain how to convert ntsc files to pal files to me. It is probably a really simple operation but i can't work it out.

  2. it's not complicated but it takes time since I have to
do it all the time as we have pal here in italy.
1)extract audio with something like CoolEdit or even VirtualDub
    2) change frame rate from 23.976 to 25 with Virtual Dub
    3) now check the length of your new .avi that you just created
in above point 2. It will be slightly smaller than original ntsc .avi
Using CoolEdit you have to shrink .wav file to exact same
length as new frame rate .avi (above point 2) and make sure
it is to 3 decimal points.
    4) now encode, if desired, using new .wav and new frame rate .avi
If you use TMPGE make sure you load a (S)VCD Pal template.

You need to do all this or your .mpeg will be jerky when watching
on dvd player....if you are planning on doing this.
I hope this answers your question.

  3. macyman's method is correct and would be pretty much the one I would use if I had to. But before you go to all this trouble check a couple of things. AFAIK, all european DVD players can play NTSC disks. When they do they either output NTSC signals or convert to PAL-60 (Pal signals at 60 fields per second). Practically all European TV's will handle one if not both of these formats, at least anything less than 10 years old and even some older models. So before you embark on this time consuming process, make sure you really need to do it.

  4. You should put your NTSC disc into your PAL player and try it first, before you go through the trouble of conversion.
