  1. I have a film that is 81 mins long and wondered if it was possible to fit it all onto one 80 min VCD rather than having to split it over two discs.

if it is in vcd standards then you should be able to overburn it.

you can burn up to 815mb in mode2(vcd & svcd) so check your filesize.

what software are you using to author?

Nero - in options change overburn to 82 minutes. make sure you choose disk-at-once and it will prompt you and you can click make overburn

Considering he said he had a film 81 minutes long he wanted to fit to an 80 minute VCD it could be an avi(to encode) or mpeg (to burn). Now we know it's an mpeg. We didn't before.

With an mpeg you have two basic options:

The first is to overburn using Nero (if your writer allows overburn).

The second is to demux the audio and video and recode the audio at a lower bitrate - say 160 kbps. Then mux.

    Which?

To overburn you need Nero. The help file will tell you how to overburn.

To recode the audio, use TMPG's mpeg tools to demultiplex. This will give you an .mp2 audio file and an .m1v. Load the .mp2 into TMPG. Load the unlock template (so you can select stream type = audio only). Alter the bitrate to 160, and choose a new name for the output .mp2. Multiplex the new .mp2 audio with the .m1v file you obtained earlier.
