  1. hey all i am more or less a n00b and i had a few questions. First let me give some backround: I have the Pioneer A04 and i have use the single layer 4.5GB discs with it since i got it and have had GREAT results i am very pleased

I was looking on the DVDr Media page and noticed a 9.4GB disc now here is ny question: Is that 9.4 GB on one side? or is it 4.5 on the bottom and 4.5 on the top ? Also how much is "RECORDABLE" on the 9.4GB discs? cause on the 4.5s you can only do about 4.2GB.

I know its a n00b question but it should be easy to answer

    thanks in advance,

  2. The only way you can get 9.4GB recorded onto a single disc is if you get some double sided media. Pressed and prerecorded DVDs that you buy from the store are dual layered discs. They fit just a bit under 9.4GB (as it's not exactly 4.7GBx2) on one side and can only be made like that off of a machine that physically presses pits into the disc. As far as writing dual-layered discs goes, the chances of it ever happening on a consumer writer is close to zero.

Also, the usable space on the disc will be 4.3GBx2 if you get a double sided disc. Just as a 4.7GB disc only holds about 4.3GB. It's all a big math/number conversion trick with the 1024kilobyte=1megabyte thing that all manufacturers do.

I would think it is unlikely that any dual layer burner will ever be available. I just read the the new blue laser spec has been finalized. I understand that this spec includes recordable media. I think it is about 20 gb single layer! This would be large enough to suport HDTV! Cool!
