I would assume there are no differences between CD and DVD other than the fact that CDs have a wider track, so that being the case, shouldn't I be able to write MPEG-2 (a small video clip) to a CD-R?
How can I burn MPEG-2 to a CD so that I can view it with my standalone DVD player?

...But S-VCDs are 480x480 instead of 720x480, aren't they? ...Well I'll check around on the site, didn't see anything before when I looked, but if you say so...

If you have a pretty good player, it will still play the svcd burned @ 720*480... I do it all the time on CDRW to test captures before making a full dvd.
-
The thing is, nero won't let me use the 720x480 mpeg-2 encoded video when I select the S-VCD template.
Is there a better CD-Writing software for this? What software do you use, medievil? -
Yes, if you are burning Mpeg-2 to a CDR/RW then it is SVCD or CVD. Resolution of NTSC SVCD is 480*480, PAL is 480*576. Here's the HOW TO:
http://www.vcdhelp.com/tmpgencsvcd.htm
You can make it DVD resolution but then you're making a XSVCD (non-standard SVCD) which isn't by far as compatible with DVD players as SVCD.
http://www.vcdhelp.com/xvcd.htm
You need to check whether your player supports XSVCD, look in the DVD Players section.

What do you mean won't let you use it? Does it say that your file isn't compatible? If that's the case then it is supposed to be that way since your resolution is non-standard. You need to switch off the compatibility mode. -

AAH! I figured it out. Correct me if I'm wrong but...
First I take my MPEG-2 encoded files and use IfoEdit to create the VIDEO_TS directory. (Does this also create the AUDIO_TS directory?) Then (in nero) I go to 'File -> Preferences -> Expert Features' and select 'Enable image recorder for all formats.' After that, I select the DVD Video template in nero, then move the .BUP .IFO and .VOB files to the VIDEO_TS directory in the template. (Do I do the same thing with the audio? That's if the authoring program creates that directory...) After that I just start the burnin' and sit back and watch =). -

Thus, you cannot burn a "SVCD" or a "VCD" onto DVD media.
To get MPEG-2 onto a CD, you will have to make a SVCD and there are plenty of resources at your disposal.
You can make a "miniDVD", which is a DVD image (abeit a small one) on CD media. However, very very few players support this.

Oh... I thought they were just like CDs, but require alot smaller laser to read from the thinner track. I remember reading somewhere DVDs have a .05micron track where CDs have a much bigger track (or something like that, it's been years since I read this).
What's the diff? Sounds interesting. Know of any site where I could read up on it? (ermm.. prolly shoudn't of said that, I'll check on this site right after I post this.)
[EDIT]
Ok I checked and found out about cDVD. It was what I originally feared, the DVD player would recognize that there's a CD in the tray and not play it as a DVD... =/ Oh well, I'll just burn the MPEG-2 non-standard to SVCD and hope for more cDVD compatable DVD players in the future. =\

For a lot of good info on DVDs, try the DVD FAQ: http://www.dvddemystified.com/dvdfaq.html

It does depend on your player too. I have encoded many files using the TMPGEnc DVD setting but with the data rate lowered to 4000k. They still look good and if I burn the file as a data CD and pop it into my Apex AD-1500 it plays just fine. Of course you only get about 23 minutes at this rate but that's good enough for a 1/2 hour TV show.
