I have done quite a bit of research on this player (pioneer 353) and it got good reviews so I bought it. It plays everything I have encoded: mp3, xvcd, xSVCD. However, the aspect ratio on SVCD's is vertically squeezed. If I set the player to 16:9 it will correct the error. Sounds minor, but to me that is a pain in the butt. I have read many reviews on the player and everybody says how great it plays SVCD's but they do not mention the vertical squeeze problem. I have read about a very select few amount of people who reported the problem but nobody responded and it gets dismissesd like they are not having the problem. I was just wondering how many people, with this player (or the 250), have this vertical squeeze problem and what they are doing about it.

    Thanks for the replies

  2. Funny, I came here just now to post about the same problem. I bought a 353 about a week ago. Love it so far with the exception of the one problem. I have been dealing with it by setting the player to 16:9 but agree, it's a real hassle. I am hoping it's a matter of using a different app to burn (I am using Nero), changing some options when burning or playing with the settings in TMPGEnc.

I have been using DVD2SVCD then using TMPG as my encoder, then I burn the images with CDRWIN. Also, I have used Ulead DVD movie factory to burn my home movies (which was captured by mmc 7.7 a few times and a few times with virtual dub then converted by TMPG) all with the same vertically squeezed results. I have used verbatim 24x silver cdr's and maxwell 4x cdrw blue, all with the same results. A couple of times I have taken a 16:9 movie and set it at 4:3. This encodes at a stretched result, however with the Pioneer 353 squeezeing the picture, the result is normal with the player set at 4:3. I thought I would just do all my encoding this way, however, if I ever buy another player then I would be screwed. Other players couldn't squeeze the picture with the new player's setting at 4:3, and switching to 16:9 would only stretch it further. I'm just not sure what to do.

    Thanks for any replies

Note: My tv is a 4:3
