  1. Hi All,

    I converting some AVI files to MPEG Format. Is it usual for MPEG file to be pretty big.

    I.E Avi File = 5mb -> Mpeg File 20mb

  2. no, avi files are way larger. mpeg2 (dvd & svcd) has a much smaller file size with little or no loss in quality from the original file. mpeg1 (vcd) is smaller yet, and you will notice less quality (quite a bit) than the original avi file.

  3. so how come when i convert a avi to mpeg using TMPGEnc and following the VCDHelp Guide i get a mpeg file that is huge

    Not often true I am afraid. AVI is simply a wrapper format and can contain video and audio encoded in many different ways and at many different resolutions. True, uncompressed avi, or lossless compression, tends to be much bigger than an equivalent mpeg (same movie length, same resolution etc). However, nearly all avi's found on the net, esp on newsgroups, P2P etc are encoded using one of the divx codecs or a derivative. These are based on the mpeg-4 format and are much more compressed than any mpeg-1 or mpeg-2 files. Hence converting one of these files from mpeg-4 in an avi wrapper to mpeg1/2 will cause the file size to grow in nearly all cases.
