  1. I've read all the hitachi dvd cam and vro conversion threads on this board and they don't answer my question. Here's the deal...

I got this new Hitachi dvd cam. I love it, it's a wonder. Just 1 MAJOR issue. The video is saved as a vro file. I copy this file to my pc, then change it to mpg. Media player plays the first clip only. SO I downloaded xmuxer and that seemed to help cause media player then recognized the entire clip. I have tried everything (that's not totally over my head) to convert this mpg to avi, or vob, or svcd and have failed. I've been trying nonstop for days and am literally about to go insane. I've downloaded dvdx and it looks like it will work but crashes 80ish percent through. I've tried dvd junior2 and it won't load the file and crashes. I've tried dvd2avi and it makes an avi but the avi is nothing but pure static? I've tried ulead's apps which do something strange- ulead appears to only show the 1st clip in my vro, then it stops, however if I click and drag the timeline bar I can see the entire clip exists! But when I go to save it as say an avi it only saves the 1st scene. I tried to edit the time out sequence from 30 seconds of the 1st scene on my mpg to 9 minutes but it will not let me.

So, the gist of this request is: How in God's name do I convert .vro into something useable??? I'll take anything at this point! Changing it to .mpg allows me to view it in players but as usual editing tools only see the 1st segment.

If someone knows how to do this please tell me. Also keep in mind I'm not a guru, so saying, yeah mux it, convert it with this command line, de-ionize it, then mix all streams down to the flux capacitor... won't get me very far. I need a fool proof way. A million thankyou's in advance for any help! Sean

  2. I found some additional info on another forum. I'll try this method and see what happens. Just posting this for anyone who has my same issue:

    -------------------------------------------

Well after many attemps Ive finally burned 2 DVD's that are perfectly in sync. Both of these were out of sync when I was using TMPGnc to demux the .vro. I found this shareware MUX DEMUX REMUX software called "Xmuxer" here
Now I have been using Spruceup but when I demux the .vro with Xmuxer Spruceup would error out when it tried to import the audio so this is what I did.

1:Open Xmuxer, a window will pop up, select Remuxer.
2:Select the .vro off the RAM disk, select a output file on your harddrive then click prepare, now press start. This will creat a .mpg file.
3:Once its copied open TMPGnc and go to mpeg tools and simple/DEMUX it like before. You will have your .m2v and your .ac3 file.
4:Now open up Spruceup or what ever your using and select the .m2v file. Both times after Spruceup imported the audio .ac3 file I received a message that the audio file was incomplete and would I like to continue parsing. I said yes and all was fine, the movie was in sync from start to finish.

The Xmuxer software cured my problems so far and its shareware...

    Good luck

VIC when I used Xmuxer to Dmux, the AC3 Audio file would error out in Spruceup. When I Remux with Xmuxer off the Ram disk to the Harddrive then use TMPEGnc to demux the mpeg that Xmuxer created then Spuceup would take it and my sync problems have gone away.

The only way Spruceup took everything was through your way:

    1. DVD-RAM drive xmuxer to .mpg,
    2. demux .mpg to .m2v and .ac3 using TMPGEnc
    3. drag the .m2v file to Spruceup,
    4. author,
    5. If you need to, change ifo with ifoedit for 16:9 enhancement
    6. burn

For all of you with with DVD recorders like Panny E20. I found a way to convert >vro files into regular Mpeg2 video and ac3 audio files. Best of all it is free. You can download it here http://www.tmpgenc.net/e_main.html . It is a Mpeg encoder but also comes with Mpeg tools. After download and launching program go to File, Mpeg Tools and select Simple De-multiplex.
Click on browse. In file types select "all files" and point to the location of your .vro file. Select it and click run. After the process is finished you will have two files. Mpeg2 Video file .m2v and ac3 audio file. Now you can use these files in any authoring software. This process is also much better than using Panasonic DVD Movie Album SE which converts 256Kbps ac3 audio into 224Kbps mpeg audio with loss of quality.

i have used TMPGE to demux the vro file into m2v and ac3 .. the next question is what software are you using to cut and edit the m2v to either shorten or edit out commercials etc ... and if you are using the mpeg tools (merge/edit) in TMPGE .. how are you synching the ac3 file to the editing m2v ...

  4. OOOOHHH YES!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've done it!!!! A total conversion and it was easy! Hitachi dvd cam mv230 owners unite! I am so happy now! This is the holy grail right here. I hope others can find this so they don't have to experience the pure hell of trying to convert hitachi vro files to mpeg or svcd, etc.

Converting .VRO files to .ASF or .MPG FILE FORMAT
You don't need any expensive software, it's all available free!

All you need is DVD2AVI & TMPGENC.

In DVD2AVI, open the VRO file, choose audio source as MPEG audio (note- i didn't see this option so left it as default and it was fine), then save project as whatever name you like. When finished you should have a tiny .d2v file and a large .MPA sound file. Open TMPEG and load the settings for the MPG you wish to create (VCD or SVCD)Encoder and use the d2v file as the video source, MPA file as audio source. and click Start. Conversion can take a while. When it's done, you'll have a standard MPG file that you can burn to VCD / SVCD or use in any editing package

    ------------------------------

I did this and it worked beautifully! The SVCD played, the audio was in sync, etc. Woohoo!
