What I usually do is copy the .dat to HD, rename it to .mpg and run it through TMPG's mpeg tools simple multiplex (VCD option). Maybe the bit missing is in the second file?

Best to copy it to hard drive if you want to do some work on it. You can also open the .dat file with Windows Media Player, then you can play the small one to find out what it is !! -
Hi jeffbond,
a *.dat file contains the original mpeg stream, but it also contains of additonal error correction methods (RIFF Header).
You can convert the file with tools like VCDEasy or TTools and so on.
VCDGear may also lead to success. In your case it seems you have an error in your mpeg stream. vcd gear splits the file on that location, the error occurs.
Switch off the error correction checkbox and you will get one complete pure mpeg file

jeffbond,
VCDgear can cause problems, including not converting the entire movie,
amongst others. Unless you use nero or tmpgenc , many other encoding and burning programs such as VCDEasy and Virtual Dub will not accept the .dat format no matter if you rename it mpg (despite what you may read from some posters.)
If you want to convert the .dat file to a real mpeg (.mpg file) try
using VCDeasy (see tools section on left hand side)
VCDeasy has a mpgeg tools section with a conversion tool
at the bottom of the application window.
If you just want to play the video no conversion is necessary. Right
click on the dat file, choose Open with on the drop down dialog box and
select mediaplayer2 or mediaplayer[icon] to play the file. -
Is it normal for .dat files in a MPEGAV-folder that they cannot be copied to the HD? When I try to do this, I alsways get the error message: "Cannot copy AVSEQ01: Invalid MS-DOS function" (File name is: AVSEQ01.dat)
I also can't open it with mediaplayer 8 (Win2k), then I get the message: "Incorrect function"
The .dat file is 350 MB and it can be played on a stand alone dvd player.
Does somebody knows how to view this file on my PC? -
I used to have a PC (AMD-K6-400) which would neither play VCD nor would allow me to copy the dat to HD. Which was ironic, because I could create VCD mpeg-1 and burn to VCD using Nero!
I never worked out why, because I decided I needed a new PC anyway. -

So (despite what you may read from some posters.)
VDUB WILL LOAD THE .DAT FILES
Naturally, Vdub will save to AVI if using this method, but it will load it !
You can also load it into TMPGEnc, tools > mpeg tools > merge&cut
This can be used for fixing minor problems, if you have two .dat files they both could be streamed through like this, then joined together later. This way they remain Mpeg 1 "MPEG 1 Video CD" from drop down list -
Hi Bwam,
