  1. Hey,

I was wondering if anyone had come up with a CVD bitrate calculator. I currently use the one from this site to do my SVCD bitrates, but I was want to fit more movie per CD and since CVD has a lower resolution I should be able to accomplish this with a quality comparable to SVCD.

Any pointers or suggestions greatly appreciated.

    thanks

Do you mean VCD? unfortunately, VCDs are CBR (constant bit rate...) you only get 1150kbit/s (224 audio), that's your only choice, 74 minutes on a 650 cd, 80 on a 700...

CVD is like SVCD,the bitrate is not effected resolution. Whether you encode at 352x240 or 720x480 the file size will be the same. A possible exception would be CQ encoding mode. In my expierence CQ mode file size is affected by resolution.

MDK - You can just use the SVCD bitrate calculator for CVD...it will work the same, wulf109 is correct. As far as VBR goes, a 1.7 Mbps average for a CVD will look better than for a SVCD.

what I want is a bitrate calculator for 1/2 DVD resolution (CVD) on DVD-R, I have been doing my rips for 2 CDs (CVD), but getting two of those movies on a DVD-R will leave me extra space that I could have used to up video and/or audio quality...has anyone seen a tool like this?
    End of Line.

  5. Thanks for the info, but let me see if I get this straight.

The fact that it is 352x480 does not have any effect on the final file size, what matters is the average bit rate so if I want to fit more on a CD I just lower the average bit rate somewhat. If I compare a 480x480 resolution file to a 352x480 resolution file at a slightly less average bitrate the quality should be approximately the same.

Hmmm, you learn something new everyday

    Thanks again everyone
    Cheers
