I've just captured my first 352X480 using the Radeon and it was outstanding. The video sharpness was unbelievable. Yet with all this celebration I found one flaw. My Apex played the file fine, but the Sony had a problem with the resolution and played only a portion of the screen. The resolution made it difficult for the Sony but not the Apex. I was wondering does it make sense to continue to record using a resolution that might not work in many DVDs? What do you think?

  2. Are you talking about SVCD or a DVD-R(W) ?
A dvd player that fails to show a 352x480 movie from a DVD-R shouldn't be called that way anymore.

  3. Sony players are known to be very bad at handling
    non-standard video formats.

The most popular brands aroung here seem to be Apex
and Pioneer-- I'm pretty sure that both of these brands
    can play your format.

352x480 is a supported resolution on DVD (burned DVD should work; miniDVD if your player can handle DVD content on a CD-R/W). It is not an officially supported resolution in SVCD, although most SVCD players support another format called Chao-Ji Video Disc, whose basic resolution is 352x480/576.

I have an Apex and it does the job well, The Sony sucks..and doesn't play SVCD. I was wondering if the non standard 352x480 would present problems in the future with newer models of DVD players. I don't want to create disks that will not be playerable in a few months or years.

  6. from dvddemystified.com:
    Allowable picture resolutions are:
    MPEG-2, 525/60 (NTSC): 720x480, 704x480, 352x480
    MPEG-2, 625/50 (PAL): 720x576, 704x576, 352x576
    MPEG-1, 525/60 (NTSC): 352x240
    MPEG-1, 625/50 (PAL): 352x288
    ----------------

352x480 is standard for a DVD.
352x480 is not standard for a SVCD (AFAIK).
