I'm beginning to tip toe into the world of SVCD with my AIW Pro and I am meeting some resistance. I am able to capture SVCD at 480x480 with great results but I am having A/V sync problems after I run them through the mpeg tools (demux-mux)in TMPGEnc. I've tried a few versions - 12d, 12e , and even got my hands on beta 12. I'm getting the same results though, obvious A/V sync problems. I've looked through the posts and see that some of you are not having any problems.
Anybody have any ideas?

are you using that "VCD" (constrained parameter) reg edit? don't. not on SVCD. i have muxed/demuxed mine with 12 and 12f with only an occasional problem from TMPG, and then i just chuck the files and try again from the demux stage. i'm doing straight SVCD 2.34Mbps and run them through the 'fix12c.exe' tool to fix the display on my pioneer DVD, but this can be done at any stage and i don't think it has any effect on those problems. i did have some issues with real short clips here and there, but mostly when using the TMPG join tool. recently i've done some 30-60 min clips with only one cut and no joins, and they work fine.

Yeah, the VCD parameter doesn't work with the Radeon either. I've only done some small test captures and remuxed with 12a. Seemed to work fine. BTW, I set my bitrate at the max 2600000.

Thanks patrick. Well I've been playing with 5 minute clips. The VCD flag is off. I noticed that the sound goes crazy if it is on with mpeg2 captures. Alot of popping sounds. The capture plays fine in the ATI player. Then I go to demux/mux them in TMPGEnc and as I said before I get serious A/V sync issues. The A/V sync problems are obvious in the ATI player so at least I don't have to burn a coaster to find out. I've tried both the simple demux/mux and the regular. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. This should be simple.
I can tell you that the quality of the SVCD is excellent, just off when it comes to audio. I think it may have something to do with taking the packet sizes down from 2511 to 2324. (?) -

Thanks for the reply RF. I've been playing around with bit rates from 2.2 up to 2.55. Both VBR and CBR. Trying everything. LOL -

Why do u need TMPG?
Cant you capture directly to SVCD.
try verison I

Thanks greg. I can capture directly to Mpeg2. When I burn it I get audio but no video. Tried running it through fix12c but to no avail. So I thought I should try the demux/mux approach. The burn plays fine but with A/V sync problems.
What's version I? -
are there problems in the original capture? how about when you FF/REW around in it. if so, set your PCI Latency to zero.
the MPEG-1 VCD constrained parameter flag doesn't belong in MPEG-2, that's why it causes problems.
where are you changing packet sizes?
fix12c only repairs the display headers so it doesn't show as a 480x540 on certain dvd players, since ATI, TMPG (some versions) and Dazzle all do this wrong, it's never a bad idea to parse your streams with it. there were some TMPG versions that i think were notorious for problems with VBR streams, so give 12f a try. -
Thanks again patrick,

The original capture is fine. When I play it in ATI player the A/V is fine. When I demux/mux A/V sync problems show up in ATI player. Crazy huh? If I don't demux/mux then it won't burn in Nero. So the only thing I can burn at the moment has the A/V problems.

I agree. It's off for these Mpeg2 captures

Sorry that was a miss-statement on my part. Not changing them

I just got my hands on 12f. Same problems.
The odd thing here is that the original capture is fine. It plays fine in the ATI player - no A/V problems. So this tells me that the original capture is fine. If I turn off Nero compliancy for SVCD and burn it plays on my DVD player with just the sound - no video. If I demux/mux it then it passes Nero compliancy but I get the A/V sync problem. And it has A/V sync problems when playing in ATI player. Crazy.
When I mux I use the Mpeg2 Super Video VBR option. Is that correct? Seems like it should be. -
yes, SVCD VBR is what you want in TMPG.
ok, i have had this problem but i don't anymore, and i'm honestly not sure why. i have recently formatted and dual boot in 2K/ME, but neither one is giving me problems. but set your virtual memory to no upper limit.
if you burn the discs at 4x, does that help for the player? i had some sync issues on some VBR discs and that cleared them up. what dvd player is it?
but maybe the original isn't as fine as you think. try some lower-bitrate (1.8 or so) lower ME attempts. with my 10x discs that had little blips and lost sync, pausing would re-sync it. it's possible the ATI player is doing this adjustment automatically. -
Thanks patrick. I can't seem to land on a fix at the moment. I checked out the TMPG web site and I picked up alot of similiar problems on their user posting forum. A common theme seemd to involve A/V sync problems with AIW cards when moving mpeg2 to SVCD through the demux/mux process. I've tried to demux/mux with other programs and have gotten the same result. Actually went as far as creating a cif in IAuthor. Same result.
I'm simply trying to compare SVCD to some of the XVCD I do. It's not mission critical but it would be nice.
If it works for you don't change anything!
