I upgraded my system to a Pentium 4, 1.5 ghz several weeks ago with a cheapo Via motherboard. Since then, my MPEG-2s play with blocks. Also, if I skip ahead, playback resumes either with blocks or the video runs too fast and the audio plays at normal speed.
I uninstalled the MPEG-2 codec I _though_ I was running, but I'm still able to play MPEG-2s.
So: is there anything I can do either to fix the problem or to identify and remove my MPEG-2 codec?

Thanks for the lead.
With Windows Media Player 7, I can get properties from the File menu (nothing happens when I right-click). However, it just says "Ligos MPEG Video Decoder" and there's nothing to select. Were you talking about a different player or version of WMP?
Anyway, is there some way to re-install or another method to configure the codec?

This opens Windows Media Player 6.4

Also with the codec, got PowerDVD XP installed?
i found when i installed this and uninstalled my windows media player Mpeg2 codec is defaulted and used the powerDVD XP codec...
goes thru checking for codec on the internet, then doesnt find one and plays properlly, Cool, i thought anyway -
Update:
I successfully removed whatever codec I had been using and have a fresh install of the Ligos decoder via MPEG-2.exe, which seems to be DivXG400.
I was getting a little systray item when I played an MPEG-2 file, which pulled up the configuration screen mentioned above. I tried the "stable" setting, but it didn't have any effect. I tried some other settings and now the systray icon won't come back. Uninstalled, re-installed several times and even went into the registry and undid the settings. No luck.
Progress: The blocks are gone. The video still skips ahead, but only for a few seconds. The audio is still out of sync.
New problem: Most of the time, the video will freeze when skipping ahead.
I may try re-installing WinDVD. I'm running Windows 98 SE and am not sure if I can use the XP version. In any case, I don't own it.
Thanks for the advice. I'm still hoping to get some more tips.
