I'm not sure but when I select the field order "B" while encoding an avi file, the resulting clip encodes with an "A". I am using Uleads DVD Workshop to author the movie. I check the info tab and see a field order "A", even though I chose a "B" as my primary selection.

The reason this is a problem to me is because the movie plays fine for 40 minutes and then gets choppy and grinds to a hault. I'm not sure if this is the problem but the inconsistancy with the A-B choices seem a bit odd.

One more thing, this wasn't happening a week ago, I was making disks with no problem. I'm wondering if it might be the new Ulead Pioneer A03 drivers.

If anyone can shed some light on this subject it would be very much appreciated.

  2. In a word Ulead has the field order flipped from the rest of the world. What Ulead calls A field first everyone else calls B field first. The mpeg encoder in DVDMF assumes A field first (Ulead definition). Therefore your AVI file must be captured A field first (Ulead definition). Check the properities of your AVI file with DVDMF. If it says A field first you are okay. If you load this same AVI file into TMPGEnc it will tell you it is B field first. One more wrinkle. Most the the capture devices capture B field first (correct definition). If you have a capture device that captures A field first you are going to have to swap the field order before you can use DVDMF. The DVDMF mpeg encoder assumes all AVI files are A field first (Ulead definition) and your mpeg file will be jerky. You can flip the order of the fields with compression codecs like PICVideo and Mainconcept's DV codec. I hope this helps.

    Fields are sometimes defined as:

    - TFF or BFF, meaning Top Field First and Bottom Field First, OR

    - Odd/Even Fields

    - Field A/Field B

    Confusing, isn't it...

You could always ditch DVD Workshop and do your encoding with TMPGEnc - it'll give you more options in the encoding step, and it's probably much better than DWS' encoding engine.
