I'm able to play SVCD (MPEG2) quality movies on my standalone DVD player through the trick of replacing the MPEG2 header with a MPEG1 header. I use TMPGENC tools to multiplex the MPEG2 file to a VCD compliant one. With this trick I can fool Nero and my player intot thinking its playing a VCD file.

Authoring however is therefore a bit difficult. For example: when I try to load the altered MPEG in Uleads MovieFactory the program crashes when I try to add chapters. When I load the MPEG2 file it goes well, but when I'm ready to burn the image MovieFactory converts the moviefile to a VCD compliant one.

I want to add chapters and some background sound, but every authoring program I know creates .bin/.cue files or .ixa files. This makes it rather difficult to replace the MPEG2 file with a converted one. Also the extension of a VCD movie file is .dat.

Is it possible to alter the SVCD file structure to a VCD compliant one?

  2. I hate to say it but you might consider buying a $65 Apex DVD player rather than spend $ and time on these type of tricks.
