  1. I am downloading the lord of the rings SVCD which comes in 4 parts. I have got the second part and have played it in windvd quality looks great, only problem is this is the only software that will open it.

My DVD player wont play SVCD so I wanted to use TMPGeng to change the header to VCD or possibly reencode to VCD so it will fit on fewer discs, but if I try to open the file TMPGenc just locks up. I have also tried opening the file in vdub but get the error MPEG import filter : pack synchronization error. Media player wont play it either.

How can I reencode this file if TMPGenc wont open it. I've never had anything to do with SVCD, because like I say my player wont play them, so any help would be appreciated.

  2. The file is an mpg not mpeg2 but it is definately a svcd file, I think probrably the mpg was just copied from a svcd discs mpegav directory.

Should'nt I be able to open this in TMPGEnc, anyone got any ideas.

  3. In TMPGEnc open the tools and do a simple multiplex of the file off of the SVCD. This will change the file from being formatted for a SVCD and make it formatted for a PC. Then as long as you have a MPEG2 codec for your PC you should be able to open it up in TMPGEnc.

  4. I didn't think there was a such thing as an SVCD-->VCD conversion.

TMPGEnc wont open the file, thats the whole problem. I have however managed to frameserve it from DVD2AVI to TMPGEnc.

  6. If you want to open mpeg2-files (which is what the mpg-file you're talking about is) in TMPGEnc directly, you can also install the mpeg2-Codec that available from the tools section of vcdhelp.

  8. can you open the mpg file with TMPG mpeg tools???? try open tmpg, file--> mpeg tools--> simple demulitplex and fill in the appropriate file locations. the try and multiplex it back together with bbmpeg (or TMPG if you prefer) using vcd offsets

  9. No it won't open with mpeg tools

  10. have you tried bbmpeg????
    http://members.cox.net/beyeler/bbmpeg.html

from the bottom of the page
Also available is bbTOOLS (also from labDV ) which contains bbDMUX, an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program/transport stream de-multiplexor, bbINFO, an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program/transport stream analyzer, bbVINFO, an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video stream analyzer and bbAINFO, an MPEG-1 audio stream analyzer. They are run from a Command Prompt window, they are NOT GUI programs. They are tools I wrote to help test bbMPEG, and as such are not very fancy, but they might be useful to others. Here is the source for all of them, also available is a source port for Linux (version 1.8 only, thanks Lee).
bbDMUX will de-multiplex any stream out of an MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 program or MPEG-2 transport stream. Run it with just an input filename and it will parse the file and list all the streams found in the file and indicate if they are encrypted. It can also be used on VOB files as they are actually MPEG2 program streams. If a Private Stream 1 is present in a VOB file, a substream of it may be an AC3 audio stream which can also be extracted by this program.

  11. try copying the vfp file that comes with dvd2avi (the one you're using for framewerving your project file) to the tmpgenc directory,, and then try opening the opening the mpg2 file. worked for me..
i did those four files with tmpgenc, converted them to mpg1-vbr(vcd ready) and put them on one cdr.

Tried that, and although when i select the file to multiplex it in tools it opens it when I click on run it locks up. It still wont open the file in the main encoding section of TMPGEnc

  13. I've had wierd problems like this when, too, when copying an SVCD mpeg file directly off a CD. This is what works for me:

If I still have the bin/cue file, I use VCDGear to extract the mpeg file. I have no problems using this file in WMP, or TMPGEnc.

If I don't have the bin/cue, I have to use VCDGear's MPEG > MPEG function to get a usable file off an SVCD.

Try it, it may work for you, too.

  14. have you tried registering {installing} the vfapi--vfp that come with tmpgenc, cant recall if its on its own directory or not.
Would increasing the directshow size help? or checking that vfp is registered to tmpgenc under the environmental settings?

    yeah what he said. LOL.

actually disc 2 through 4 of lotr are oddly encoded and therefore basically doing what he said actually works.

use vcdgear to extract the mpg from the bin file. with lotr I used the don't split mpeg option under options tab for vcdgear 3.0.

now I went a little more extravangant here. I then used vcdeasy to create a new bin file, (which by the way the new bin file when burned will now work in most players that play svcd and not lock up) I found that disc 2-4 would lock up on certain dvd players.

Anyway so after creating a new bin file I then extracted it using vcdgear once again.

the new file after the whole process above should yield a workable mpeg file.

sounds like a bunch of b.s. don't it? LOL.
If you are wondering why I did the vcdeasy step is when I just extracted the mpeg out it still wasn't workable in vdub or tmpgenc, both gave errors.

I have no clue why after going through vcdeasy to create a new bin that it worked, but it did. LOL.

okay that was weird deja vu

  17. Ok, Thanks for all the replies to this problem. Firstly the files that I have downloaded are mpg files not bin files. Although TMPGEnc wont open these mpg files directly for encoding I have now managed to do a de-multiplex and multiplex with mpeg tools. When I muliplexed I chose mpeg1 VCD non standard.

However when I play the disc in my DVD player the picture only takes up about two thirds of the left hand side of the screen. The audio is also out of sync by a couple of seconds and the audio occasionally stutters (this may be down to the high bitrate of 2520kbps).

I have also tried reencoding as a standard VCD by frameserving the file from dvd2avi but the in resultant VCD compliant mpeg the audio is way of sync, probrably about 10 seconds.

    Any more ideas.

  18. Right I have sorted out the audio sync problem I just did a multiplex on the original mpeg without demultiplexing it first. Sound is still jumpy so I guess I will have to reencode at a lower bitrate anyway, i'm sure this will give me sync problems. Picture still only takes up the left two thirds of the screen.

  19. I just tried the vcdgear mpeg to mpeg trick now when i try to open the file in tmpgenc it does'nt lock up but I get the message, unable to open file or unsupported. The DVD2AVI.vfp file is in environmental settings and I have tried raising the priority of the directshow and VFW readers but to no avail. I just want now to try and make a standard VCD from these SVCD files because changing the header using multiplexing is giving me problems with stuttering audio (too high a bitrate?), audio sync and not displaying full width on tv.

Problem is I cannot open this SVCD in TMPGEnc to allow me to encode it to VCD. I have tried frameserving it from DVD2AVI and I managed to encode a compliant VCD from the d2v and mpa files but the audio was way out of sync.

  20. Make sure you have the mpeg2 codec installed correctly. Download it again from the tools section. This might help.
