When I was lookng up some video editing information, I heard some really good things about AVIsynth especially for VHS formats. With that said, it was only until fairly recently that I heard that AVISynth was outdated and you are better off with much better things. I had no idea that this was a thing because I assumed that AVISynth was still being used even in professional settings. I am not a professional myself but I always wondered why it is considered to be outdated. Can anyone give more insight into this topic?

That's a nothing statement. What are these "things", exactly?

It was only used by a niche % of pro users, though it should have been more widely adopted by users of old sources -- ie, why so many documentaries contain garbage quality video segments. It's not because the footage was bad, but because the editor lacks skills.

The main thrust has always been the advanced hobby community.

To be blunt, a lot of "professionals" couldn't edit a film with scissors and tape. I remember a studio hiring a guy that only knew how to use iMovie and Quicktime, and he was apparently hired only because he was a church friend of a c-suite exec. He always wanted to talk about religion, never about video. His work sucked.

Something "complicated" like Avisynth is immediately dismissed without even understanding what it is, or can do.

The term "professional" is too often used as either
    (1) an excuse to not do something quality, or not buying something quality --- "I'm not a professional" or "I don't need professional"
    (2) or as a claim by somebody whose only skill is to collect a paycheck (ie, the typical definition of "professional")

It sadly never means what people think it does.

At best, it is mostly true that Avisynth excels at working on problematic older analog sources. So it would be "outdated" because of "outdated" sources. But even that statement is overly underplaying Avisynth abilities. It can work with HD, 4K, etc.

  3. Vapoursynth is where the most advanced stuff is now. Some of it is being back-ported to AviSynth.

    Can Vapoursynth coexist with Avisynth?

If you download the amazing Selur’s Hybrid, you’ll get both, with QTGMC.

I was referring to "better" editing software. I might be wrong about that.
