Feed digital footage externally into Camcorder LCD Screen??

Hi, I wondered if someone could help with some reverse engineering of playback on a VHS-C

We're shooting a story where our main character is watching old VHS-C footage on an old VHS-C compatible camcorder, with the footage also playing on his modern TV. In the story, the VHS-C gets mangled and the tape ruined.

We shall shoot the fictional footage on an old Camcorder, put it into an editing program to artificially add the mangling effects, then we'll need to play this digital footage through both the Camcorder and a TV simultaneously to make it look like the character is playing back a VHS=C. The actor shall then take out a pre-mangled VHS-C in time with the mangling effect on each screen.

But how do we do this? How do we play digital footage through the camcorder's LCD screen? Might there be a particular model that allows this?

We have not yet purchased a particular Camcorder if that helps.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply and yep, best solution so far, and it's been suggested, alas the director and the budget don't like this idea so much.

Take your mangling digital footage, record it onto a VCR using a VHS-C tape and playback the tape in the camcorder, If the camcorder has A/V input you can accomplish that without a VCR but most VHS-C don't. Most Sony V8/Hi8/D8 camcorders do have this function, it's called VCR.

I can understand the director not liking the idea, but as for budget, using a free edit like DaVinci Resolve, it won't cost a penny and could look very realistic.
