I've used the fade effect often but I want an effect where a line fades out while the next fades in simultaneously. If I try that with the regular fade tag, the next line will move above the previous line, though I want it to be at the same position as the previous line.
How to do this?

Can't you have two separate lines and have the time codes overlap and specify the positions the same?

I found pages with references to "Collisions" in the docs it says"

Collision - Determines how overlapping lines should be handled. In "normal" mode, the first line will stay where it is and the second one drawn above it. In "reverse" mode, the first line will be moved upwards and the second drawn under it. - Under File, Properties:

 http://docs.aegisub.org/manual/Properties

But the setting is "missing" now - the 3.2 docs say the setting is under "View/Options":

 http://docs.aegisub.org/3.2/Options/

If you can find it, let me know - it is hidden somewhere... maybe there is a setting for "ignore"
