I know how to make subtitles for my iPad, but I want it to look similar to closed captioning, complete with a black text box. I combined the text with the m4v using mp4box, then I went into Quicktime Pro and selected a all black image for a mask. It looks like it doesn't work, no box appears in iTunes at all either, it's just the text.
Is there a way to do this? I don't like the transparent look of the box and I really don't want to spend a whole bunch of money on a Mac just to do closed captions.

Do not think you can do it with burnt in subs unless you create the mask at the same time (then the mask is fixed and potentially looks un-tidy)
With external subs you can configure a player such as vlc to do what you want. (the mask then changes as the subs length changes)
Maybe Quicktime Pro also works like that. But I not not use it. -
Quicktime Pro does do it via Text Track, but there is no option to turn it on or off, it's burned in by default, unless there is something I'm missing.
I thought the text descriptors of "Keyed Text" or "Do Not Display" would help in some way but not quite.
