Hello,
I have been searching threads in this forum for awhile and not finding exactly what I looking for so I'm asking other members for advice.
There seams to be dozens of conversion programs out there but maybe someone can share what is working for you.
The task:
I am looking for one product that can batch convert both DVD movies in file structure format (vob) and BD movies AVCHD Video (.m2ts) to MKV container.
I have ~300 DVD and 100 BD's all ripped in the original file structure. I'm not necessarily looking for freeware to accomplish this (would be nice though) and will gladly pay for a product that is proven to just work as advertised.
Thx
Bw

If you want smaller sized files, encoded to H264, and placed in an MKV container file, Vidcoder works well for batch encoding. Free to use.
You might want to use different settings for DVDs vs Blu-ray, but once you make a preset for each type, batch encoding should go smoothly. I would advise using Constant Framerate in the video tab, rather than variable. And you'll need to make a decision on what type of audio you want. It is possible to pass through the original audio, or convert to AC3 or AAC. -
Not sure why people are lining up here to tell the OP on how to reduce the quality of the videos.
If he simply puts the videos into a mkv container he will not degrade the video quality at all.
And isn't that what we all want, good quality videos? -
No. Some people want smaller sized files. The only reason I make MKV files is to play on portable devices. I don't need original quality or original size there.
@pub
Thanks for the links. All of those use another program with MakeMKV, which is fine. I just didn't know of a way to do it within the program. -

Good grief. Look at my first reply and pub's. We both say "if you want smaller sized files", or "for a smaller filesize". We both recommend similar programs to do this, and if the OP wants original quality in an MKV, he can follow pub's advice and subsequent followup for batch encoding with MakeMKV.
We've covered the bases reasonably well. Quit getting your panties in a wad newpball, just because everyone doesn't have your inane prejudices towards compression and/or changing resolutions. -

Since I started this thread I thank everyone's response. To newpball's point, video fidelity and quality is the #1 priority for me when executing these conversions and have no intentions of using compression of any kind. I have been using media browser server and MB classic for years but now I want to stream my collection using other devices and MKV seems to be the best solution while maintain original quality. Comments welcome Please.
Thx

Ok, fair enough. MakeMKV may be what you need, but I couldn't get Movies2MKV to work for batch encodes with Blu-ray input using the trial for MakeMKV. Apparently it will work if you purchase MakeMKV.
DVD's did work for batch encodes with Movies2MKV using the trial for MakeMKV.
That's the only one of the batch options I tried, mostly to satisfy my own curiosity. Perhaps someone else can give you some feedback on the others.
