S-Video is video not audio. You need to run another cable for the audio.

I am completely aware of that. The camera has a mini(?) S-video able port plus the standard component cable video port

You mean composite right?
I suggest Amazon for cables. Keep it short for quality!
Your camera has a 4-pin mini-DIN that is simply standard S-Video.
If you want to be sure go to your local store and test it first.

Hi ,
Have a look at :
http://www.manualowl.com/m/Canon/ES8600/Manual/40921?page=24
It is said :
Use the optional S-150 S-video Cable to connect the S-video terminal.
Use the C-250 AV Cable white plug to connect the audio terminal.
There are pictures for understand where to connect .

Since you intend to digitize Hi 8 recordings, I just wanted to be sure that the "cable" you wanted to find was not some sort of USB capture device. Some product descriptions for USB capture devices use the word "cable" as in this example: http://www.amazon.com/StarTech-SVID2USB2-S-Video-Composite-Capture/dp/B000O5RIWO
If you want the genuine Canon part, Adorama Camera has Canon S-150 S-video cables available: http://www.adorama.com/CAS150.html?adver=new&
I couldn't find the C-250 AV cable used by your camera for sale anywhere yesterday. Don't loose it. -
