  1. Hello all,

a while back I made a video that is inside a mkv container but is in 4:3 aspect ratio. Is there any way to make this h264 video into 16:9 without re-encoding it?

    Thank you in advance.

  2. container info can be changed with mkvmerge/mmg
h.264 raw stream stream info can be changed using http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=152419 after extracting the stream with mkvextract

  3. MKVToolnix is a fairly straight-forward package incorporating the tools Selur mentioned. Drop your file into the "Input files" box, select the video track, change the aspect ratio under "Format specific options."

    What exactly are you asking?

Are your trying to stretch your image?

  5. thank you all for your reply.

Newpball, yes due to many complaints about the picture on 16:9 TV sets. If they want a stretched image they can have it

I will never understand why so many people love stretching 4:3 videos to fill their 16:9 TV. Gives me a headache.

Most people love degraded video (and, yes, stretching the image does degrade it). They're accustomed to cheap, noisy, discolored CRT's, so they think that's the way video is "supposed" to look. Viewers with more visual discrimination can't stand it.

Rather than degrade the video yourself, why don't you tell your users to just stretch everything with their TV controls? That's what they do anyway.

You made the 4:3 video right, you are the videgrapher!

I am sure you had a valid artistic or technical reason for making a 4:3 instead of a widescreen video.

    Talk to them about respect!
