Backing up a SKY recording on DVD

I have successfully been backing up recordings from my SKY+ on my DVD recorder without any problems, However the last few have a lower volume on playback when ripped to my PC, the latest one also has bending effect of the picture on the very top, something like a tracking problem on a VHS player. So can anyone point me in the direction of what could I be doing wrong, and what program can I use to CROP the top of the picture, for final authouring onto a DVD
