so i'm viewing a music video from a website and decide to keep it. i don't want to go bother relearning all that rtmp stuff and whatnot. i don't want to screen capture it either since my connection speed is only DSL and its not perfect. so, with a little luck, i find the file in a temp folder. however, the file is locked.
1. i tried to rename it. it won't let me do that.
2. i tried the usual click-drag, release to copy it, but it won't let me do that either.
3. i tried to open via hex. it won't let me do that either.
4. if i close down the webpage, the file will be deleted. it is not recoverable via undelete apps. i tried that too.
its not a movie, its a 3.5 minute low quality music video.
so what do you do (to recover or copy) a file like this ? did i miss anything else ?

If you are using firefox you can use the addon downloadhelper and see if it will download for you. I think, therefore i am a hamster.

ok, i searched and found a

 https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/video-downloadhelper/

and clicked the [+ add to firefox] button .. it went through the installation process (I think) but i don't see the add-on feature.

ok, i read a little more. i went to this site:

 http://www.downloadhelper.net/welcome.php?version=4.9.21

i should see three colored circles when a potential file is d/l'able. but they are grayed. i used its test videos that should work, but the circles are still grayed out and no arrows are showing.

I had the same issues that you are describing,i had to refresh and click on the links, quit and reload and fiddle with the settings and finally got the links to work. I think, therefore i am a hamster.

nevermind. it seems to be working. actually, the video from that website is recording, too.

i still don't have an answer to the locked file or file in use issue.

but at least this method works, thank you for your help!
