  1. I've converted three HD video files i recorded from the TV - from .ts to .mkv - using megui.

I have been experimenting. The first time i used DGAVCindex, the second time i used direct show after tweeking my win7 codecs. The third time i allowed Megui to produce a script using FFVideoSource. Some i did using using more than the one method but i think the files i kept were created as i've described. I wasn't too worried as they all seemed successful re-encodes.

However i've discovered that the last one won't navigate in VLC. It opens and starts OK but if i click along the timeline it locks and eventually crashes. The only real difference i can find in mediainfo is that the first two show 'stream size' but the third one does not.

Can anyone throw some light please?

    Thanks.

To me it appears that the result is incomplete, possibly the multiplexing to a final MKV failed for some reason. Check if you can find an MeGUI log of this job, and if it contains an error from mkvmerge.

  3. The final multiplexes were done in mkvmerge using the reencoded video and the original ts for the audio. I did extract the streams from the problem file using mkvextract and then remuxed them, but it made no difference. I'm trying a more scientific conversion using the three methods to try to isolate the problem better.

Edit - it does seem to be somehting to do with the muxing. The video-only file produced using ffvideosource navigated fine in vlc and showed an entry for stream size in mediainfo. But when i muxed it as described above, the video stream size info disappeared and the muxed file locked up in VLC.

I guess the answer is not to use ffvideosource on this type of file - any way to repair?

  4. I thought i should just clear this up. I finally nailed the problem and it's nothing to do with the various methods. I was muxing in subtitles direct from the original .ts along with the audio. There are three subtitle streams in the .ts (2x teletext and DVB) and mkvmerge only recognised the one. These were fine in terms of format but somehow 26hrs got added to the timings which i guess was screwing up the muxing. I'm not sure what causes the sub timings to go out because it doesn't always happen, but mkvmerge shows the last sub timing as the duration of the video and audio tracks and does not report the stream sizes in mediainfo.
