  1. I am in the process of converting a VHS tape to VCD.

    Here is my setup:

My VCR is hooked to my Sony DV camera. The Sony is also hooked to my fireware card. I use Adobe Premiere to capture the video and save it as an .avi.

I can't get any Video editting programs, other than Premiere to open this file. Video players - WMP can play this file without a problem. Video and sound are great.

I can convert this file to an mpeg-1 using TMPEGen and the video and sound are fine. The 12 GB .avi file is now 577 MB .mpeg file.

I use Nero 5.5.6.4 to burn a VCD and the problems start. When I do get a good burn, I play the CD in my DVD player and the video is not that great. I suspect this is from the converting process. The video isn't horrible either but there is no sound.

The MPEG-1 file plays fine on the computer - video and sound are both present but when I burn the VCD with Nero, there is no sound. I will try to play this disc on my laptops DVD player to see if there is sound on that one. My stand alone DVD player won't play sound.

Does anyone have any ideas? Do I need the DivX codec installed to get other programs to play the .avi file that Premiere captured?

I followed the guide for burning VCD with Nero, just incase anyone was wondering on the settings that I used.

    Thanks,
    Dave

If you're sure the MPeG-1 is VCD-compliant and the encoding in TMPGenc wend fine (I know by experiance that encoding large clips, >20minutes, tmpgenc could mess up the audio, resulting in audio loss), then I would suggest you to use VCDwizard instead.
VCDwizard creates a cue/bin file, which you can burn using CDRdao or even Nero (latest versions). A cue/bin is a CD-image.

If you're wondering where you can get VCDwizard, then follow this link : http://www.labdv.com/vcdwizard/. VCDwizard is a free application.

  3. I found out what my problem was.

I did use VCDEasy and created a VCD with it. While this was burning, I checked the cables on my DVD player and found one of them was loose.

After pushing it back in, my original VCD I created with Nero worked both audio and video.

I will check out VCDWizard and see if it is worth my time.
