Hi, was wondering how power supplies affect video cards. I have a 400 W power supply, card I desire to get requires 500 W power supply.

Will the video card still work ? Thanx

I found a little table that illustrates what resources are taken from a PSU

To answer your question you must therefore consider all the items in your system.

  3. It's a bit like asking how long is a piece of string. Except at least in order to answer the piece of string question, it's not necessary to know what type of string it is, or how many other pieces of string will be connected to the PSU.

Most likely you will get a lot of crashes with your 400w psu if you install the video card that requires a 500w psu,It's best to get a good quality 500w since most stock psu that comes with store bought computers and generic psu that are sold are very cheap and wont do the job.

Look for brands such as antec, seasonic, corsair and thermaltake, they usually give you the real 500 watts that the cheap brands don't give but claim to.

But it is safer to go higher than 500 watts. As has already been said, the video card manuf does not know what components you are running in your system. What if you decide to add some more in the future ?

And your current PSU may not have the connectors for the graphics card. You need to check that closely as well.

  7. You read something wrong. No video card made needs 500 watts. That is a recommendation, to make reasonably sure that the extra power the card needs is available. One HD and not a power-hog system, 400 watts will likely run it just fine.

Simple to plug it in and run it for a while, see if it works. If it doesn't, get a better PSU. If it does, spend the money on something else.

Try running a titan or 690 on a 500w psu.
