  1. I downloaded "Movie Studio Platinum 12 (64-bit)" and activated a demo period.
    OK, it's a capable timeline-based editor.
But the "make movie" wizard is not to my liking. Even the full "export" path does not have very many choices, and certainly not the type of detail that I get with a dedicated encoder.
I could not find a choice for uncompressed, either.

I want to use AVIDEMUX to do a denoise filter and the encoding.

Anybody know how to feed a .vf project to avidemux?

I wonder if the limitations I'm seeing are due to the "consumer" level pf Movie Studio I chose, but that's not gone over in the product comparison matrix. Besides the number of tracks, effects, etc. there is no checkbox for "brain-dead save feature".

Years ago, I installed a Windows codec that allowed any program to be used as a frame server. That was ten years ago. I thought piping these things together was all standardized and properly supported now.

  3. I'm curious what specifically you think you can do in Avidemux that you can't do in Vegas.

Unless it changed from v.8 it should be

1: Make movie > Save to hd

2: Change path of output to whats needed
3: Change Format to > avi for windows
    4: Click "advanced render" button

    Next window

    5: Name file
6: Template (what is used for project output requirement)
7: To the right is "CUSTOM" button, Click it

8: In new window click video tab at bottom
9: Video format = uncompressed (audio is preselected as uncompressed pcm)
10: Click "ok" to go back

11: If all is fine click "save" and wait

First of all, the denoise video filter. My low-light video shows some scintillation in broad open areas, and besides looking better smoothing that out greatly increases compressibility. Avidemux came with a big bag full of filters for that purpose. I found nothing like that in Sony Movie Studio Platinum 12.

Second, it only offers AC3 at 48khz and 192kBPS for sound, period. I can't set AAC, save some bits, or use the same sampling rate as the original material (44.1khz).

Third, the video offers only a simple selection of target bit rate. With Avidemux I can use constant quality and not waste bits getting up to the max! And control every detail of the encoder, which I've fiddled with and found what gives good results with this camera's footage.

Thanks! It is arrange differently now (just one box), but picking the right template to start with before modifying it makes all the difference. I was able to choose "uncompressed" for video and PCM sound. The Project tab crashes the program though — second crash bug I've found (first is the use of MP4 for output). AVI was filed under "W", (Window Video), easy to overlook .
