  1. Is there any difference between the two media besides the capacity and the the machines to play them. ofcourse I know that a blu-ray wont play on a dvd machine.

My trouble shooting and confusion are about bd-java playback on a dvd media. is it possible? I have compressed my full blu-ray back-up through bd-rebuilder to bd-5. But it seems like it wont play the menu etc. when i'm burning to a dvd media

There's no guarantees at all with regards to BluRay format on DVD media playback.

Some machines don't support it at all. Others do, but they're very fussy about it. Some may only play DVD discs in AVCHD format and will not play them if they are DVD format. Other players have the exact opposite requirement. Some will play anything.

Also, you do need to know that most DVD discs are pure crap and some players will play your discs fine, BUT they demand good media. The only good brands left any more are Taiyo Yuden (you will have to buy them online) and Verbatim (anything EXCEPT their "Life" series is fine). If you use anything else, you may have problems.

Finally you should burn only with the free ImgBurn for the best chance of playback success.
