    Hello,

Off and on, I enjoy watching older movies from the the silent area up until the late 40's. I have always wondered, considering the age of some of these films, if it makes any difference if they are on DVD or Blu-Ray. And to be sure, I'm NOT thinking about "Gone With the Wind", but more like Black and White films, like say "Grand Hotel" with Greta Garbo. Would DVD technology be sufficient for these types of films?

    Thanks.

    Mike

If the studio does a proper HD transfer of the film masters and restoration, then the Blu-ray will have a higher quality picture compared to the DVD.

Yeah, you've got to remember that film is VERY high resolution. It's not impossible to get 10-12bit 6k x 4k (that's 6144 x 4096) scans out of 35mm film (though a lot here depends on the quality & generation of the negative). Especially since we're talking Luma channel only, we wouldn't even have Bayer process rounding losses.

So BD could be much better than DVD, and a 4k DCP could be noticeably better still.

Alas, with the sorry state of film preservation, it would be a crap shoot to determine whether there still exists masters (of the titles you are looking for) that exhibit that level of quality. Even so, there still is some juice to be squeezed out of them if a studio thinks the title's legacy warrants it.
