  1. Hi All,

I'm lately converting my surround music DVD's to AVI with Dolby or DTS to play in my car (which can play surround soundtracks).
It's so much easier and more versatile than authoring DVDs.

The problem is that some of those DVDs (which i have purchased!) have still image instead of video.
One example is the King Crimson DVDs, another is the Genesis series.
If i try to rip the video track of the Crimson (in the court) DVD, i get a file of about 100K.
If i try to rip the video track of the Genesis (nursery cryme) DVD, i get a normal sized file, but playing it back with VLC causes it to crash, and opening it with VirtualdubMOD will give me an error about Anachronistic or discontinous timestamps in Virtualdub‏.
Encoding it will result in a very short video file.

    Any ideas?
I've tried many tools. I have AnyDVD installed.
    No luck...

    Thanks in advance!

How do you extract the video track? I use pgcdemux.

    Hi Baldrick,

I usually use DVD Decrypter, but i also tried Smart Ripper and now PgcDemux, and i'm still getting a 96Kbytes M2V file for the first chapter.
If i try to demux the video stream of the entire VOB (~43 minutes), i get an M2V of 483Kbytes, which won't play.

I don't think it's a copy protection issue, since i can rip it to my harddrive and play it back with any software i choose (like VLC).

Any suggestion would be highly appreciated

    Thanks again!

  4. Yes, the DVD from that set.
Can you see why this is failing?

According to the Genesis fan sites...that is a DVD-A or DVD-Audio disc. You may want to read this:

I thought to answer no it isn't, but i'm not sure anymore...
Doesn't DVDA contain an AUDIO_TS folder and soundtrack of MLP or something like that?

These DVDs contain DTS and AC3 soundtracks and some of them contain video as well. So how can i tell?
And if it is an audio DVD, can i rip the pictures that are displayed while the music is playing as video for the AVI i'm trying to create?

    Sorry for the odd questions
    And thanks!

You tell us....you have one. What does the folder structure look like in Explorer?

Wow, i feel pretty stupid right about now. AUDIO_TS is not empty.
    But both contain files.
When i play the DVD (listening to the DTS soundtrack, not MLP), which of them is playing? I assume it's the VIDEO_TS.

Again, my end goal is to have a VOB/MPG that contains both "video" (which is a still picture) and the DTS soundtrack and convert the "video" into Divx/Xvid in an AVI container while keeping the DTS untouched.

Once again, thank you everyone for your kind and prompt support! I really appreciate it.

The file structure is as follows (hope it's not too long):

I got to the same conclusion after doing some reading. I cannot rip the video, since there's no video to rip.

But i'm not entirely screwed, i can always capture the image and generate a video from it. It's just a bit more cumbersome.

Thanks again for all the help!

Starting with only a short M2V or even a BMP (just extract that single picture) and audio of some sort, you can encode that single pic to any length you like by using an Avisynth script. For example, with a single BMP you can extend it by following the instructions here:

    http://avisynth.org/mediawiki/ImageSource

By specifying the framerate and the number of frames, you'll also be setting its length (make it the same as the audio).
