I have now managed to make a few VCRs with different settings. I am lost about 2 pass VBR setting. What is this please and how do you set it?
Also is there a help file/guide to TMPGEnc please?

2-pass vbr means that the encoder scans through your source video first and then allocates the bitrate according to how much is needed at any given point in the movie, per your settings. By "vcr" I assume you mean vcd? If so then 2-pass vbr is not a compliant method of encoding vcds because vcds only use cbr. If you use 2-pass vbr then there is a pretty good chance that your vcd will not work in your dvd player.
If your making a svcd and using the svcd template then in TMPGenc you can change the rate control mode. Set it to 2-pass vbr. If your using a vcd template than you must first load the unlock template before you can change the rate control to 2-pass vbr, its in the extra dir.
If you use 2-pass vbr for encoding then use a bitrate calulator. You can find some on this site under the tools section. With this you can determine the exact settings to use to fit x amount of video on x amount of space.
