Hi
I have MKV data files which I can play on my blu-ray player unconverted if I burn them as a data disc to blu-ray.
however I try to do the same but just using DVD media but it doesn't work. Is it supposed to? I have tried to burn using both ISO mode and also UDF 2.50 mode.
What can I do to save burning it to blank BDRs, as the MKV files are only 3gig max.
Thanks,

you might buy a self-powered usb hard drive and copy the mkvs there for playing. or a network dlna server. depends on what your blu-ray player supports and if you have a home network. --

You should check your Manual, and your manufacturer's support site...

Just finished looking at the manual and I don't see ANYTHING about support for MKV at all. Looks like you just barely lucked out even being able to play them at all on that machine...

Mentions it supports: BD, DVD, CD, MP3, JPG, MPEG2, DivX, AVCHD. That's it.

They added support for it via firmware download later on
But the question is this. If I burn a Mkv file to both a bluray and DVD it should both play?
being on different media shouldn't make a difference?

 See http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/3D/Panasonic/Industry_Trends/Panasonic_Adds_MKV...y_Players/4657

When I put DVD in player it goes to select Mkv file, says starting playback then blank
On bluray it starts to play.... weird
-
The max data rate from DVD may be lower than the max data rate from BD. From the DVD spec it's about 10 Mb/s, the Blu-ray spec 54 Mb/s. Individual players may support higher rates.
-
maybe the only way to check is to burn the SAME mkv file to both media to see.

still I read in some forums the method is the same though.

burn as data disc to DVD and the BD player should read it.

should it be iso format or udf 2.5
-
Only the people who wrote the firmware can answer you last question. If the MKV file is over 2 GB in size you have no choice. It must be UDF.

For all we know, there are limitations on what formats and file sizes it will play on DVD. For example, a 4 GB MKV may fail on DVD because the firmware may not accept any UDF format on DVD for data discs. Or maybe only UDF 2.1 and below work, or only 1.02 works, but you burned to 2.5 and that doesn't work.
-
I see. So I just have to see what firmware I'm running and check with Panasonic then
-
Also, alot depends on the logic of the processor firmware. For example: A processor can look to the disc properties first and then give you a subset of supported "applications" or playback types based on the disc, or it can be more agnostic and look at the properties of the files/contents of the disc, ignoring what kind of disc it was burned to.

Just like a few years ago when people could only occasionally/sometimes play DVD-Video burned as UDF1.02 onto CD-R, or MP3 files not reading when burned to data DVD but reading just fine when burned to data CD, etc...

But it could also have something to do with the type/quality of media...

Have you tried burning to Data DVD in UDF 1.02 format yet like jagabo mentioned? IIWY, I'd try burning one of each mode: ISO, UDF 1.02, UDF 2.1, UDF 2.50 & UDF 2.60.

I doubt Panasonic will tell you anything useful. Just experiment for yourself. Start with some small, simple, low bitrate files on a thumb drive. Then try on a DVD. Then on Blu-ray. Then try higher bitrate files at higher profiles and levels.

Chances are, as MKV playback was implemented via firmware as an after-thought, your player is only be capable of playing MKV files burned to Bluray.
-
mmm I have tried data disc iso and udf2.5, I'll give udf1.02 a go tonight and let everyone know.
-
asinasin-please do not crosspost in older threads,i deleted your post there. I think, therefore i am a hamster.
-
I burnt a different MKV file onto DVD udf1.2 and that worked, but original mkv file which I burnt with iso, udf 2.5 and now udf 1.2 didn't.

So it must be the mkv file? aren't all mkv files the same? yes I know they may have different bitrates, but as to not even play?

MKV is just a container. A box if you will. A box in your house might contain books, old VHS tapes, plastic drinking glasses, etc. Just like that analogy, an MKV file could contain a variety of possible video and audio formats. Install MediaInfo on your PC and post a screen grab of what it says about the problem file. We can tell if it contains encoding options that can be problematic for BD player playback.

It works! MKV burned to dvd udf1.2 and plays great.

So what's the deal with the header stripping? Just to save a few megabytes? at the expense of limited playability?
-
It was (and is) part of the MKV standard - but originally, nobody bothered to enforce it, so likewise, hardly anyone included support for it, more or less. Then, the author of mkvtoolnix decided it needed to be enforced, and everyone else needed to update their devices/players/whatever.

Of course, it's a little better now, as mkvmerge includes that setting to keep the header compression off by default. It originally didn't, and that bothered a number of people.Last edited by Ai Haibara; 22nd Apr 2012 at 02:03. If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them?
-
That's probably the reason it took a while for someone to suggest disabling header compression, because going by your original post it sounded like the same MKV would play when burned to Bluray disc but not when burned to DVD. Were you actually using the same MKV file(s) when comparing disc playback?

I guess as almost anything's possible when it comes to hardware/software, maybe an MKV using header compression won't play when burned to DVD while it will when burned to Bluray, however it seems unlikely.
-
I had two different MKV at the beginning, one on blu-ray and another on DVD.

I thought MKVs were all the same originally, (in structure) so I didn't think different MKVs mattered.

As the forum replies came through, I figured it was the MKV file that was the issue, and used mediainfo.

Thanks a lot everyone, really helped to solve this problem.
