You could use an all-in-one converter like freemake video converter and add clips, make custom edits(scissor), select the join button(top right), and convert to a single mp4,avi, mkv, etc.

You're getting your terms and ideas mixed up here.

    "Edit/Join" refers usually to simple splice cuts or appending of similarly or identically-formatted material to get a comination clip that is also that same identical format. E.g. VOB A + VOB B = VOB C, DV-AVI 1 + DV-AVI 2 + DV-AVI 3 = DV-AVI 4. See?

If you start with "VOB" and you end up with "MKV", "Xvid" or "AVI", you are almost ALWAYS converting to another format, which requires decoding and re-encoding.

Just changing, say the extension, from VOB -> AVI does NOT really make it an AVI. At the very least, one must remux (aka demux + mux into different container), and that only directly works if the resultant container accepts the stream codecs natively.

I'm not going to suggest an AIO editor, because most don't do as good a job as more specific editors - use the right tool for the job!

    Ok,
Thanks; All I'm trying to do is convert "3" vob files to avi (what ever) and at the same time join them together into one avi, and do this with out changing to another program, ie convert vob to avi then load the avi into another program/joiner and join them together. I would like to do this within one program, if there is one....

If it's an XviD or DivX AVI you want, then open the first VOB in AutoGK and the other two (assuming they're numbered consecutively) will automatically be added. And then take it from there to make your AVI. There are also other all-in-one programs you can try.

Well, since you HAVE to re-encode anyway, kill 2 birds with one stone by using a full-fledged NLE, not a cut/join app.

That means, use apps like: Sony Vegas, Adobe PremierePro, Avid Media Composer, Cyberlink PowerDirector, GV Edius, Magix MovieEditPro, Corel VideoStudioPro. In a pinch, you might could use Virtualdub/VdubMod, but you'd have to have the correct plugins for input, etc. and be familiar with how to get what you want out of it. You'll also have better ability to do fancy edits/transitions and fx this way.

The whole benefit of cut/join apps (fast, lossless creation of a combined file because of no re-encoding) is lost when you convert, because then you HAVE to re-encode.
