  1. Buddy of mine got me thinking on this, and I don't have a good answer for him:

I tried the ADS USB Instant DVD, and while the quality at the upper end of the setting spectrum is adequate, editing MPEG files is just an exercise in futility... so back it went.

In its place I picked up a Canopus ADVC-100, and am capturing my analog files straight to AVI and doing my conversion via TMPGENC.

His question: "Why did you pay $300 for the Canopus? I can plug video connections into my WinTV card and the audio into my sound card and capture straight to AVI that way. That way costs half the cost of the Canopus."

I didn't have a good answer for him. Did I over-purchase picking up the Canopus? I'm capturing VHS and laserdisc material via S-Video connection for burning to CDR, DVDR.

Would a WinTV or All-in-Wonder card be just as good?

    Thanks in advance.

They explain, very well, why the ADVC-100 is worth the price tag.
As Churchill famously predicted when Chamberlain returned from Munich proclaiming peace in his time: "You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor, and you will have war."
