These movies have already been completely ruined by jamming all of them onto one DVD....now you want to ruin them some more? These aren't ZIP files man.....once the quality is gone it is gone for good.
Also you are not "ripping" them....you are converting them.

Wow, probably a good thing she's leaving. Wouldn't want to REALLY hurt her feelings if someone was actually mean to her.

Use DgIndex to build an index file then an AviSynth script with Mpeg2Source() including the deblocking option.

    Mpeg2Source("filename.d2v", CPU=2)
CPU=2 deblocks only the luma, 4 deblocks luma and chroma, 6 deblocks and derings both luma and chroma. Then open that script with HandBrake (or any encoder that accepts AviSynth scripts) and encode. Example images:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/337748-How-to-encode-xvid-with-h-263?p=2101241&view...=1#post2101241

And if you're learning to use AviSynth it has other deblocking filters, Deblock(), Deblock_qed(), etc. with more control over the deblocking strength.

Of course, what you're doing is replacing blocks with smooth gradients. That may or may not look better to you.
