I know I can use DVDSubEdit to reposition &/or re-color subs in the VIDEO_TS file (which I do quite frequently), but is there *any* program that can reduce the font size or change the font type used? (WITHOUT having to rip the files apart and do conversions?)

    Thanks!

That would require at least creating (encoding) new subtitles and re-authoring. The existing video and audio can be re-used without conversion.

To clarify, DVD-Video subtitles are stored as vobsubs - in a bitmap format, as images. To change the font or text size, you'll have to re-create most or all of those images.

Ok. Thought that might be the case, but was hoping there might have been some new software out that could do it.

Thanks much for the fast responses

With English Subs I've been very lucky with DVDSubEdit

Import the subs from the DVD. Do automatic OCR. Export to .srt. Often I get an .srt ready to go. If there are errors you can often find them quickly by searching on the underscore character '_'. Seems when I get errors the line of dialog looks like "_&%%_$*__" gibberish. The gibberish always seems to have at least one underscore character.

This also works well for PGS subs that have been downsized to 720x480 using BDSup2Sub and exported either as idx/sub or ifo/sup. It only takes a few minutes and doesn't alter the DVD source. Worth a try.
