  1. Hi guys,

I've searched the net a million times for this but nothing ever comes up.

You know how when you load up a youtube video it buffers all the way through and then you revist it later and it is still buffered?

Well sometimes, this works and sometimes it doesn't.

    My question is:

Are there any add-ons/plugins or anything at all you can do to firefox to help keep them buffered???

I realise that this would mean a fair bit of HD space but the ability to clear out files would also be handy.

  2. Just download the videos. I use Firefox plus Download Helper.

  3. In firefox try: file> tick workoffline but this way you won't be able to surf the net.

  4. There's also a cache size you can set in the Flash player options. I'm not sure if changing that will help.

keeping your youtube video cached.. it plays instantly because it "cached" the video file in a temporary folder. and depending on your browser settings, when you open or close down the browser, it will delete the temporary folder contents. I sent my opera browser to do this because it can and does fill up with over 10,000 files and i find that these slows down opera, not to mention causes other problems.

actually, this is browser dependant. as a youtube video is streaming, and depending on your browser, (lets use opera) it dumps the file in a cache folder ( in opera, it is named cache4 ) and some of the files (it creates containers for are) tmp, flv, and mpeg, in some cases, mp4. vimeo webiste videos will usually be dumped as mp4, ie opr036T4.mp4, but most YT flv videos get dumped to cache4 as tmp files. just rename them to video.flv if it makes you feel better.

anyway. as i was saying. when you play YT streaming videos and it completes playing, this buffer is actually the cache folder file. it remembers the location and filename and plays it instantly. if you delete that file tmp file, it will re-download it all over again and cache as another new *tmp* filename. this is browser dependant. not sure how firefox and IE deal with YT videos.

  6. Firefox (the Flash player actually) under Windows XP caches Youtube videos in "C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Local Settings\Temp\" with odd names like fla6ef.tmp. But the files are locked (you can't copy, rename, or delete them) and they are deleted when you exit the player (navigate to another page, close the browser, etc).

Firefox under Win7 caches Youtube videos in "C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Mozilla\FireFox\P rofiles\SomeRandomName\Cache". The file has a random name with no extension. It can be copied to another location via drag/drop and renamed with a proper extension. The files seem to remain there for some period of time, even after closing Firefox.

But really, just get Download Helper and download the files you want:

  8. Well what's happening is i'm having a friend over on saturday night and I want to show her a few youtube videos but my internet speed has been shaped as i went over my limit.

So I wanted to keep a few videos buffered. doesnt matter...... I might download the videos, I might not. but anyway I was referring to how sometimes they don't stay cached even if you HAVEN'T closed the browser.

  9. Some youtube videos aren't cached locally but are purely streamed.
