Hi,
I have read the sticky here regarding divx and a few other threads, so I get why my two dvd players (Philips dvp 3310 and dvp3120) would not play my divx/avi file self-burnt dvd disks- despite protestattions that they would!
So, is there either an easy program to 'convert' my dvd's, or is there a cheapish but great player that will literally play any divx file disk of any size/type, copy or shop-bought?
Thanks

	AviRecomp

The Western Digital WDTV series plays most Divx/Xvid files. About the only feature they don't support is Xvid's 3 warp point GMC.

Other companies make similar devices with similar feature sets. Seagate's FreeAgent Theater+, Asus O!Play...

If you want to convert your DVDs to divx/xvid use dvdfab or dvddecrypter to copy it to iso then use fairusewizard to convert the dvdiso to divx/xvid.
I second the western digital hard drive media player it supports a wide variety of formats and is not restricted to the fat32 that the dvd players are. It even plays dvr_ms the video files created by media center recordings.

Thanks jagabo, I downloaded AviRecomp and running it on one of my avi files- it takes hours!!

I tried searching this site for Xenta players (cheap on ebuyer) and this forum says it's divx/xvid compatible, but I don't know how good it is;-

Thanks, Lowell (we cross-posted!), I'll look that Western range up then, although they seem a bit expensive?
-
What's your definition of expensive? The basic unit can be found here in the US about $100USD. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Western+Digital+-+WD+TV+HD+Media+Player+for+USB+Storage+De...&skuId=9689944. You get what you pay for.

True, but it was only about £30 here in the UK on some electrical retailer sites, though possibly discontinued now?

I wondered what dvd players will also just play any disk?
-
Dvd players are completely limited, but not the new wave of bluray players which are more expensive.

Thanks, lowell, I'll look out for a WD media player then. I'm a novice, do they (the basic type) connect to a TV directly? Or a PC?
-
Whilst unknown and unheard of Chinese brands, selling for little or no money, may offer good quality, it is generally better to go with a known quantity. I think you will find the WD range (of media streamers) far more competent at playing back any files you have.
Just transfer them to a usb stick and plug it in the side.
These devices connect to a TV, same as a DVd player.
Other similar devices to consider are ASUS O play, ACRyan, PopCorn A110 ... also other good ones exist see http://www.iboum.com/index.phpCorned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

The most basic version hooks up by RCA (red/white/yellow) connection, while a more advance versions can hook up by HDMI, and yet another upgraded versions also have ethernet networking (hulu/youtube/pandora/network streaming) for about $20 more, plus play DVDISO dvd menu and all.

Just to update, in case anyone else has a similar dilemma, I solved it!

From Sainsbury's I bought an LG dvx550 dvd player for £24 and tested the disk I was most anxious to play and bang, played clearly straight away!

 Thanks for everyone's great advice!

My Philips DVP5990 and DVP5140 never choked on any DivX/XviD files, ever.

Never had a problem with my Phillips DVP3982 playing any Divx/Xvid files on DVD or CD.

If you want to see some examples of files that won't play properly try downloading the Divx Test CD:
