I am looking for a file renamer that will let me batch move characters from one location to another within the same files.
This is the way files look now: 1234 Test file.mpg
This is the way they should look after: Test file 1234.mpg
I have looked at several renamers but none of them have this feature. Any help would be appreciated. Free or paid.
    Thanks.

Sounds like a very specific requirement that may not have a one-click type solution. Is this a once-off requirement, or something you'll be repeating often? My suggestion would be to export the directory listing to a text file, load it into a decent text editor, edit the filename list into RENAME commands by copy/pasting partial lines as required (ren "1234 Test file.mpg" "Test file 1234.mpg"), save as a DOS .BAT file and run it from the command line.

An alternative would be to use Excel or such to load the text file and uses formulas to generate a list of new names you then export.

For an ongoing solution, maybe write a small BASIC program or such to do the editing for you.

This would be a perfect application of something like a Perl script under Unix/Linux. Windows does make things hard, doesn't it? I don't think you're ever going to find a program that can do that. This is going to take a specialized script.

Ant Renamer should be able to do it for you. I've never done what you had to do but the "move string" function should be able to do it just from a quick test on a file. The number of characters you want to move from the beginning of each file has to be consistent though.

  5. Have a look at the Multi-Rename tool option off the File menu of the excellent file manager util (amongst other things) Total Commander written by a guy called Ghisler.

  6. Hmmm, I seem to recall that Bulk Rename Utility http://www.bulkrenameutility.co.uk/Main_Intro.php
has the ability to do something like that.

Thanks for the tip. The Ant Renamer does exactly what I wanted. If others are interested in this thread the Ant Renamer is free and portable. Thanks again.
