I am a severe newbie to h264 stuff...I just graduated to a new win7/64 computer after living with a 6 year old win xp model. I'm trying to convert a .avi file encoded with h264 to a dvd. Tmpgenc 4 authoring works is giving me the dreaded "cannot open the video part" of the file, etc. I'm not exactly sure how to proceed.

The file will play on my computer with vlc and wmp. Gspot says codecs are installed. I don't have ffdshow installed...yet...

I'm not sure how to proceed, but thought I could try getting some expert advice. I don't want to try installing a bunch more garbage in the hope that it will work.

You use avstodvd. I guess it also can convert to mpg files that you can import in tmpgenc authoring works.

Ah, I didn't want to give up on tmp so soon.

Also, I'm not finding exactly what the output files are on avstodvd, and if they would be compatible with tmp.

The usual method is to ensure you have the directshow codec installed (perhaps FFDshow or CoreAVC)
and then enable the dshow plugin in Tmpgenc.

AVStoDVD is an all-in-one package. It creates the m2v video and ac3 audio and combines them into the video_ts folder structure,
which you can then test and burn. Optionally, you can ask AVStoDVD to keep the intermediate files (m2v and ac3)
which you can then drag into Tmpgenc for the authoring. (Another option).

Thanks for all your advice guys.

I did finally get it working by using the advice in post #5 (installing Shark007) in this thread: https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/309626-need-help-importing-MKV-files-into-Tmpgenc-Xpress-4-under-Win7-x64-please
