I have some .ass subtitles but no program I use recognises them when hardcoding them onto videos. I did have a program that would hardcode them on but it reports a crash whenever I try.
How ever when I applied an SRT subtitle to a video using Handbrake it worked beautifully... but the rest of the subtitle files I have are all .ass
I googled for a bit and kept on coming back to topics on this forum, tried them all but to no avail, VobSubs' SubResync doesn't open for me, I clicked it and ... nothing at all. So I downloaded Subtitle Workshop had a little tinker around with it but have absolutely no idea.
So now I've decided to sign up here and ask for some help? please?![]()

Sounds as if there might be something wrong with the subs. Can you upload them here so we can check?

You should be able to convert your .ass to .srt with Subtitle Workshop. Open Subtitle Workshop, File > Load Subtitle. Browse to your .ass file. File > Save As. Double Click SubRip. Name your file and voila you should now have a .srt file

The ASS subs have a bunch of undefined styles, like 'Matsumoto Commentary' and all the other 'Commentary' styles. I think if you go through and remove the 'Commentary' part (like change 'Matsumoto Commentary' to just 'Matsumoto', you should be OK. After warning me and then changing all the 'Commentary' ones to 'Default' (which probably isn't what was intended), they both open OK and encode OK. I was playing them in Media Player Classic Home Cinema and testing them in VDubMod using an AviSynth script and the TextSub filter.

Subtitle Workshop doesn't handle ASS > SRT conversions all that well, in my experience and opinion, but that's not really Subtitle Workshop's fault. The main reason subtitlers use the ASS subtitle format is so they can use different fonts, styles (bold, italic, sizes, etc.), colors, positioning and effects. The 'true' SRT format doesn't support any of that, so a conversion will probably result in a not-quite-ideal SRT.
I've been using VirtualDub (and VirtualDubMod) with the TextSub filter (VSFilter) to hardsub ASS subtitles onto AVIs for use with my DivX/Xvid-capable DVD player. This page might provide more information about using that method (or the AVISynth method) to hardsub using ASS subtitles.
AVIDemux can also do it, but it doesn't seem to honor different font choices (at least, it didn't on any of my attempts) and may not actually support all of the effects ASS subtitles can use; I couldn't be sure.If cameras add ten pounds, why would people want to eat them? -
I've finally got it to work in VirtualDub with TextSub, how ever one of the videos wont load in VritualDub because it is H246? or something like that cant exactly remember.
Is there a way to fix this? an Add-on perhaps? -
Install ffdshow (and enable the h.264 encoder/decoder in VFW Configuration if necessary). Alternately, you can try this VfW version of x264 (the page is primarily for x264, but the VfW builds should be there as well), or this version - but I haven't tried them, so I can't comment on how well they work.
