Newsgroups isnt filesharing, its a worldwide used function similar to email and every email has settings for newsgroups, you need to read more about this subject before labeling it as simple file sharing.

    I useD Netscape Communicator.

Later, I messed around with Outlook Express ,
then, used Google for a while.
But today, newsgroups have too many spammers and too many trolls,
and Google is getting fatter and fatter, slower and slower,
    therefore, ...

    bye-bye Usenet.

  7. Agent & Newsbin pro, both worth the money. Agent stores your incoming & outgoing email for you automatically.

Use http://www.binsearch.info/ to find what you want, create a NZB files & open that with NewsBin.

Netscape about 10-15 years ago, when there were still people on newsgroups.
Tried Microsoft Mail & News a few times, but there were problems with binaries (images, back then).
Near the end there, I remember using Forte Agent.

These days, it's just binaries (warez, porn) and spam. Nothing worth viewing. Indeed, bye-bye usenet.
    Web-based forums took its place.

Like several of you, I've moved one from newsgroups to web forums mostly, but when I did use newsgroups, I used Xnews.

I believe you've missed one big content on the newsgroups:
    Spam
Fake cracks & Hacks and Keygens, all infected and malicious.
And of course the big daddy, DRM'd WMVs

OTOH my Brother does use it and loves the aviation and boating and fishing newsgroups.
If I'd known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself.

  11. If you want binary NG you have to pay. At his time there are around 100,000+ NG I think, that's a lot of choices.

Lots of Yahoo Groups have been overtaken by spam and abandoned, too.

That was the transitional platform between newsgroups and forums.

Like anything, it has it's hit's and misses...I use Newsbin Pro, Newsrover and have used Agent...Not everything is Spam, or infected...You just have to learn how to navigate through the groups and see what you're looking for...I download a lot of woodworking PDF's, Magazines and files for my shop projects...Plus there are alot of discussion groups relating to just about any topic under the sun...

  15. I've never used newsgroups before, but are they something I should check out at sometime or another? Or are they should something I should just forget about and walk away?

  16. NG are 50% of the web if you know how to use them. Mostly used for files so you can get those.
